A Seat at the Table: Women’s Sacred Right to Vote

Why women should vote

Sugarbird Marketing’s CEO, Janinne Brunyee was invited to participate in a very special conversation by the Washington State Women’s Commission. This conversation focused on why it is critical for women to vote. Janinne was joined by a range of women of all ages, some of whom chose not to vote in the 2018 mid-term election. What followed was a fascinating conversation, captured in this video, that highlighted what happens when women come together to take a seat at the table.

Why women should vote in every election

Women make up 51 percent of the U.S. population. In the 2018 mid-term election, women turned out to vote at slightly higher rates than men. Over half of women (55%) who were eligible to vote cast ballots as did 51.8% of men, according to a Pew Research Center analysis of newly released data from the U.S. Census Bureau.

However, in 2018, younger women turned out in much lower numbers than their older counterparts. Five years ago, slightly more women ages 18 to 24 turned out in the midterm election than men (18.2% and 16%, respectively).

While every person has to make their own decision about whether or not they will vote, we would like to offer a few reasons why women should vote:

  1. You can prevent the election of politicians who want to roll women’s reproductive rights and who are denying the realtity of climate change which impacts women disproportionately.

  2. Your vote will determine the composition of the Supreme Court for generations.

  3. You have the opportunity to ensure that women have a seat at the decision-making table by electing more women into office.

  4. You can help ensure economic advancement for women – by voting for men and women who are committed to ensuring gender equality in our society.

  5. You can take a stand against gun violence by voting for candidates who support gun control.
